5th Annual Live Oak Arts Festival to fill downtown Pascagoula
LOAF to feature live music, arts and crafts, family fun

Pascagoula, Miss.--The Live Oak Arts Festival committee has already accepted 115 artists and craft makers to participate in this year’s event on Saturday, May 10 in downtown Pascagoula, Miss. The fifth annual Live Oak Arts Festival (LOAF) will span Delmas Avenue and the downtown district that day from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

In addition to vendor booths, this year’s LOAF will feature live music all day, a classic car show, children’s activities, blacksmithing demonstrations, rides from the big red wagon for adults and kids, a book signing, downtown shopping and local cuisine.

“We plan to fill Delmas Avenue entirely,” said Belinda Dammen, festival chairman. “We’ve been working on LOAF since last fall. It will be an event the whole community can enjoy.”

LOAF showcases local talent, both visual artists and musicians. The live music lineup will kick off at 10 a.m. with Garland Kelley and Rebecca Smith. At 11 a.m., singer-songwriter Madi Cooper, a 15-year-old Pascagoula native, will take the stage. Cooper is a student at the Rock U2 Academy of Music in Ocean Springs and has become a regular indie rock performer along the Gulf Coast. At noon, The Mirage Band will perform a mix of rock, blues and oldies. Sara Smith and the Suburban Jazz Quartet will play at 1:30 p.m.. Headlining the festival from 3-5 p.m. will be local Americana favorites Sugarcane Jane.

At the Pascagoula Public Library, literary fans can meet author Valerie Winn, a Gulf Coast resident who grew up in McComb, Miss. Winn will be signing copies of her novel Forsaking Mimosa, a tale set in the fictional Mississippi town of Mimosa, Mississippi.

The children’s area, hosted by DC Inflatables, will be set up in the lot next to Scranton’s Restaurant. Children can play on fun jumps, have their faces painted and take home their own balloon animals from Weavo the Clown.

For children and adults, there will be plenty of shopping, eating and rides on the big red wagon around the festival perimeter. Local shops and restaurants will be open all day, and vendor booths will line the center of the street. Blacksmith Lyle Wynn will demonstrate his blacksmithing skills. Wynn is a member of the Mississippi Arts Commission Artist Roster and the MS Craftsman’s Guild.

“There will be something for everyone, from fine artwork you can take home, to birdhouses, handmade candles and lots of great gift items,” said Dammen. “It will be the perfect place to take mom for Mother’s Day or pick her up a gift.”

The LOAF classic car show will take place on Pascagoula Street. Registration will be from 8-9 a.m. Judging will begin at 11 a.m. and 16 awards will be given out at 2 p.m., including Best Paint Job, Best Interior and Police Chief’s Choice. Dash plaques will be given to the first 40 drivers, sponsored by Clark’s Professional Car Care.

Chelsea Merrill, a 21-year-old art student at MS Gulf Coast Community College, designed this year’s commemorative festival poster featuring a waterfront view behind a large oak tree and pays tribute to Pascagoula’s many industries.

“My poster idea came from all the aspects of Pascagoula,” said Merrill, a Pascagoula native. “I wanted to show a big part of Pascagoula’s industry—oil, shipbuilding, shrimping and fishing.

Signed copies of Merrill’s colorful design will be available for purchase at the festival, and she will have a booth selling prints, original art and t-shirts featuring her designs.

On the Friday before the LOAF, the committee will recognize two historic oak trees as is festival tradition. The ceremony will begin at the Comer Oak, located at the corner of 11th Street and Washington Avenue at 5:30 p.m., followed by a festival sponsor reception at Paradise Deli & Grill.

Live Oak Arts Festival is an annual community event taking place every second Saturday in May in downtown Pascagoula. This free, public event is coordinated by volunteers and sponsored by local businesses and the City of Pascagoula.
